Darren started off his career as a landscaper building domestic gardens in Central London. Working for Robin Williams, Charles Cheshire and Pamela Bulmore Darren developed both a love of plants and an eye for spacial proportions. In 2000 he designed his first garden and continued to design and build in London for another 5 years.
In 2005 Darren and his wife moved started a new business, Wheelbarrow, in Fowey, Cornwall. Initially this was a design and build practice but as work grew and projects further afield came along a separate design company, Darren Hawkes Landscapes was formed.
The company now designs gardens throughout the UK and continues to oversee the build of any projects within Cornwall and Devon using its sister company, Wheelbarrow, for implementation whenever possible.
Darren has designed and built show gardens for Coutts, Brewin Dolphin and Linklaters/Maggie’s at RHS Chelsea winning two gold medals and a silver-gilt. Recent projects include domestic gardens in London, Cardiff and Cornwall, Maggie’s Centre Forth Valley and ongoing development of the Maggie’s Centre at Bart’s Hospital. In addition Darren is the lead designer on the greening element of a major regeneration project in St Austell, Cornwall that involves ceramics and art with public landscape to improve the environment for business, tourists and residents alike.
