21st Century Design

19-Sep-2018
Seminar Theatre 1
What this means in the landscape design context, focussing on concept led design, sustainability and a site- specific approach.
Daniel Lobb will be discussing Wabi sabi. Identified as a key trend for 2018, this is a traditional Japanese term which encompasses a way of life focusing on finding beauty in imperfection and accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay. This includes incorporating materials deliberately chosen to weather and develop a patina over time, alongside exuberant seasonal planting allowed to self-seed.
To embrace this philosophy as designers, we must first understand, ’see’ and feel the site.
When designing, careful consideration may be given to borrowed scenery; retaining or repurposing existing elements, structures, materials, textures, forms and shapes.
When wabi sabi is incorporated into design, a more restful and peaceful atmosphere can be nurtured and enjoyed, with clients and visitors embracing the humble, informal and seasonal.
